Minnesota Music: Pictures are priceless

Posted by: Hammer / 10:36 AM

City Pages has a list of Minnesota's Fifty Greatest Singles. Jambo can complain all he wants that Roadrunner is underplayed on KCMP, but you won't hear most of these tunes on the local station, either.

The whole point of lists is to quibble, but I don't know enough about most of these groups to complain. Strength is an odd choice for the Gear Daddies. I guess Color of Her Eyes was just too obvious. Maybe I'm resentful because I'll always have a special attachment to Statue of Jesus, a song Ms. Hammer disliked enough to almost give up on the entire band.

Toolmaster is Trip Shakespeare's Zamboni -- a better song, to be sure, but still infused with novelty. I would've gone with Reception or Slacks. Of course, if you go with Slacks, you can't include this lovely photograph:

And, of course, we can all be grateful that Closing Time didn't make the list.

Send your favorite Minnesota songs to my good friend Hicksie (disclaimer: Hicksie is not, in fact, my good friend). Suggestions are to appear here.

And since when is "Kiss" Prince's best single. And they got the wrong Time selection too.

For Prince I would've picked Little Red Corvette or I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man.
