About that Madden curse. Shaun Alexander is on the cover of the new Madden game. That fact lead to this note in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:
Since this is America - the land of opportunity - WagerWeb.com has stepped up to the plate and encouraged bettors to plop down legal tender on whether Alexander will rush for more or less than 1,750 yards this season.
"So far, most bettors don't think he'll make it," said David Johnson, WagerWeb.com CEO. "The 'curse' has predestined football stars featured on the game's cover to injure themselves or produce below average numbers the following season.
"While 1,750 yards is by no means a bad year, Alexander is consistent and should be able to reach the total, unless the curse takes hold."
If Alexander is consistent, then the chances that he'll rush for 1,750 yards are slim, indeed. Alexander has rushed for more than 1,750 yards exactly once in his 6 year career. This also means that 1,750 yards would be above Alexander's average. In his 5 years as a starter, Alexander has averaged 1,500 rushing yards per season. Not much of a curse when a consistent player exceeds his career averages, is it?
