Regular 3WN readers will know that we've been following the curious case of Nathan Sproul since before the 2004 election came to a close. While a crack addict who defrauded a Democratic voter registration group by filing false voter registration forms was sent to prison, Nathan Sproul has retained his status as a respected Republican adviser despite being implicated in the destruction of voter registration forms.
Until today, most watchers thought that the RNC paid Sproul $500,000 for consulting and voter registration efforts. Now, however, Mark Crispin Miller is reporting that Sproul & Associates received $8.3 million from the RNC in the days before and after the November election:
On Dec. 3, 2004, the Republican National Committee filed their Post-General Report with the FEC, accounting for all expenditures between Oct. 14 and Nov. 22.
Among the Itemized Disbursements there were listed six expenditures to Sproul & Associates, amounting to a total sum of $4.5 million. Three of them were for "Political Consulting," and the other three were for "Voter Registration Costs." The RNC paid Sproul the biggest amount on the day before the election: $1,668,733.
This raises obvious questions that must be addressed. How much did the RNC pay Sproul? What was Sproul paid to do? Did the RNC to cover up the payments? Did the RNC properly account for its spending, or are there other mysterious oversights that ought to be addressed?
We must learn from this election to protect democracy in the future.
