Still slogging through the RNC mail from the last several days. Here's one about keeping taxes low:
When we said everything is on the line in this critical election year, we meant it.
Just ask Charles Rangel, the man who would write tax law as House Ways & Means Committee chairman under a Democrat majority. When it comes to raising your taxes in 2007, Rangel just this week said "Everything has to be on the table."
Here's how the National Journal reported it: "Asked whether tax increases across the spectrum would be considered, [Rangel] replied, 'No question about it.'"
Just when you thought across-the-board tax increases were a thing of the past - a relic of the Clinton era - one of the most powerful Democrats lays it all out for us: if Democrats are allowed to take control, they will raise your taxes - and everyone else's.
I've added the links as they are in the original. Now, I wondered why Rangel would be in favor of 'across the spectrum' tax increases. Specifically, I wondered what the 'spectrum' was. I thought maybe the links would provide more information. Substantiation, perhaps.
Sadly, no.
Each link takes you straight to a donation page. I did a little digging. Here's another source for the Rangel quote:
"Asked whether tax increases across the income spectrum would be considered, he replied, 'No question about it.'" (Martin Vaughan, "Rangel: 'Everything On The Table' To Blunt Impact Of AMT," CongressDaily PM, 9/26/06)
"Meanwhile, Rep. Charles B. Rangel, D-N.Y., who would likely become Ways and Means Committee chairman if Democrats recapture the House, vowed to put all of President Bush's 2001 and 2003 tax cuts (PL 107-16, PL 108-27) - which expire in 2010 - on the chopping block." (Rachel Van Dongen, "Rangel Says Democrats Won't Be Going Back on Tax Pledge, as Former President Did," CQ Today, 9/26/06)
I don't subscribe to CongressDaily, so I can't give you the full quote. Here's a press release from Rangel's office. Seems to me that Rangel is saying that income taxes might have to be increased so that the Alternative Minimum Tax can be addressed. That's a responsible idea that the GOP should be parroting, not perverting.
