I won't have much to say about the congressional race in Minnesota's Sixth District. I think Michele Bachmann is an awful representative. I hope Bob Hill puts together a great team and runs a great race. It sounds like he's starting off on the right foot:
Hill says he has been tapping into Patty Wetterling's support network from her unsuccessful runs in 2004 and 2006, but he draws a distinction between her candidacy and his own: "There were so many times in the debates when Bachmann would say something that was demonstrably false, but Patty was so good-hearted that she didn't want to go for the jugular. This is a contact sport. The Republicans managed to paint Patty as extremist -- that's just remarkable. It won't happen to me. I'm going into every chamber of commerce to talk about health care; I'm going into church basements, into little towns -- this is not about party, this is about what kind of representative we want in Washington.

0 commentsThe Strib has a profile of Michele Bachmann in today's edition:
Bachmann, 51, has been here barely six months, a quarter of a term that began with harsh headlines. She was widely mocked after the State of the Union address for gripping President Bush's shoulder as firmly as a mother at Target, then later for confidently claiming to know about an Iranian plan to partition Iraq.
She offers no apologies, but the incidents have made her more wary, more conscious that video cameras and YouTube have an audience, and that the blogosphere has a taste for blood.
Dear Star Tribune -- Bachmann's comments about a secret Iranian plan to partition Iraq were made in a conference call with reporters. It's not on YouTube. Did bloggers pick up on the story? Sure, yes. Of course. Because a U.S. congresswoman was claiming that she was aware of a secret Iranian plan to partition Iraq and give safe haven to terrorists.
It was news. Big news. Sorry you missed it.
I guess we'll never know whether the kid likes bad pop and debt relief or the reefer.

1 commentsThis just strikes me as odd. The note is from Polinaut, but it concerns the Strib:
GOP Rep. Michele Bachmann clarifies her Iran comments in an op-ed in the Star Tribune. The Star Tribune also does a story and says she wasn't available for an interview.
Bachmann also refuses to talk to The Big Question.
So the allegedly lefty newspaper runs an an op-ed from a U.S. Representative who is unwilling to answer the paper's questions on the record. I think it's far too accommodating to give space on the editorial page to someone who won't answer questions about what she writes.

0 commentsThe Strib has 2 articles on Michele Bachmann's recent claims of inside knowledge of an agreement to partition Iraq. The Big Question has a better follow up. Polinaut also jumps into the fray, by printing Bachmann's clarification.
What no one seems to be mentioning though, is why Shia Iran would set up an enclave for terrorists in distant parts of Iraq. Specifically, in the Sunni West and Kurd North.
The problem is not that Bachmann is talking out of her ass about a partition of Iraq, but that she betrays total ignorance of the geography and demographics of Iraq.

0 commentsBe sure to check back at the Big Question later today. Today's Big Question appears to be, "How crazy go-nuts bananas is Michele Bachmann?":
Iran is the trouble maker, trying to tip over apple carts all over Baghdad right now because they want America to pull out. And do you know why? It’s because they’ve already decided that they’re going to partition Iraq.
And half of Iraq, the western, northern portion of Iraq, is going to be called…. the Iraq State of Islam, something like that. And I’m sorry, I don’t have the official name, but it’s meant to be the training ground for the terrorists. There’s already an agreement made.
They are going to get half of Iraq and that is going to be a terrorist safe haven zone where they can go ahead and bring about more terrorist attacks in the Middle East region and then to come against the United States because we are their avowed enemy.
For those scoring at home, Iran is East of Iraq, not north. Not west. East. West is Sunni. North is Kurd. If you did partition Iraq, something tells me that Iran would "get" the bordering areas, which also happen to share a common religion.

1 commentsYou know, I almost felt sorry for W last night. Not because Michelle Bachmann in her off-virgin off-white suit was fondling him like he was a German chancellor. I felt sorry for him because for at least part of the speech he looked like a beaten dog, a man who knew he was done for and there was not a damn thing he could do about it but try to run out the clock without having to actually concede. But then I realized that for him running out the clock meant stalling the pullout in Iraq until the photos of helicopters plucking people off the roof of the US embassy came on the next guy's watch. And that of course means the needless loss of thousands more American troops and hundreds of billions dollars. At that point I just wanted to give the mutt one more good kick. [Sorry about the metaphor, Spot.]
