Rob Reischel

Posted by: Hammer / 8:35 AM

Sorry for all the Packer posts today, but I'm thin-skinned Packer-wise. And nothing bugs me more than Rob "Simply Put" Reischel. Last year, Reischel couldn't go three paragraphs without inserting an ill-fitting "simply put" into his stories. This year is starting off no better:

On punter B.J. Sander:

B.J. Sander has virtually no German in his vocabulary. He's picked up a few terms such as good morning (guten morgen), thank you (danke schöen) and good-bye (auf wiedersehen). Other than that, he admits to being clueless.

But the Green Bay Packers' punter isn't tooling around Europe to improve his foreign language skills. He's there to better his punting. And right now, Sander is acing that part of his job.

Oh, come on. Sander has been in Germany at least 7 weeks and he hasn't learned more German than one could pick up in a single episode of Hogan's Heroes? How about "ein bier"? How about the German phrase for a touchback? Or maybe, as a punter, the German word for "to punt"?

Then there's this nonsense:

Not only is Green Bay saddled with the first-place schedule, but the other teams in the division appear to have gotten much stronger, too....

The Packers' schedule figures to be a major obstacle, too, as Green Bay faces seven teams that went to the playoffs last year and four division winners. Add it all up and it's easy to see why a fall from grace could occur.

When the NFL expanded to 32 teams in 8 divisions it rebalanced the schedules. Next year, the Packers and Vikings will each play 16 games -- including the 2 games they play each other, they will share 14 common opponents. The only difference is that the Packers play Philly (13-3) and Seattle (9-7) while Minnesota plays the New York Giants (6-10) and Saint Louis (8-8).

The Packers play 4 division winners: Seattle, Philly, Pittsburgh, and Atlanta. The Vikings play 4 division winners: Pittsburgh, Atlanta and the Packers twice.

Simply put, the schedules no longer matter as much as they once did because the schedules have been rebalanced and, also, because the NFL has reached a new level of parity, where last year's division winner might well fall apart this year.

A professional reporter should be aware of these basic facts.
